United Way of York County’s mission is to build a stronger, caring community by cultivating financial generosity, volunteerism and advocacy. They are connecting people in need with programs that help, focusing on education, health and financial stability.
United Way is kicked off York county’s largest annual fundraising campaign on August 30. They welcomed, leading mental health speaker, Mike Veny to share his experiences in addressing and erasing the stigma around mental illness. Guests also heard from a panel of local mental health experts at this free event.
“You look at people all the time and think they have their stuff together, but so many people are struggling. We had, I think, over 70 suicides here in York County in 2017,” Veny said.
That’s why United Way officials felt like it was time to turn the focus on getting York County residents the help they need by raising money for partner agencies that deal with mental health.
“It shouldn’t be a special subject that we talk about. We should talk about it in a normal voice, the same way we do allergies. If you think about it, people talk about mental health in a very low voice. They want to keep it private. We’re the problem at that point,” Veny said.

http://www.OC87RecoverYDiaries.com/mike-veny/ Mike Veny, weight lifter, professional musician, ted talker, and mental health keynote speaker, has something to say about what it means to be a real man with mental health issues. As anyone who has ever been afflicted by issues with mental health or has been the friend, family member, or loved one of someone who has suffered due to their issues with mental health can attest to, to hear Mike Veny speak is to hear some very real, very raw, and very poignant talk on the matter. Mike has made it his personal mission to not only talk about mental health issues and how they have affected his life but also to let his listeners know just how he has overcame and continues to overcome and to be an advocate for mental health awareness. He does this through traveling around the world as motivational and inspirational mental health speaker.
In his early years Veny was repeatedly expelled from school due to behavior problems and spent time in a psychiatric hospital on three different occasions. Veny admits that in his childhood the ‘real men’ he idolized were thugs, tough guys, and trouble makers, who in retrospect were more than likely suffering from mental health issues of their own. Anger, Veny says, is a common disguise for depression among men. Veny contends that this is especially true in a society in which many men are struggling to determine just what a healthy sense of masculinity is.
Mike says he has accepted that his battle with depression and anxiety may be an ongoing one and emphasizes that he only wants to be in control of his life. As a professional drummer, he uses his talent for personal therapy, reaching out to others, and for his continuing advocacy for understanding mental health issues. As a mental health keynote speaker some may find it odd that Veny never wanted to be a speaker in the first place. Mike says he’s far more interested in people not dying and only wants to be a disruption that will get people talking about mental health. Until the suicide rate drops to zero, Mike assures, he won’t close his mouth about mental health.
He is honored to have had the opportunity to work with OC87 Recovery Diaries to release this video on depression and masculinity.
