Improving Teaching: Professional Development for Teachers – 2020 (Actionable!)
Today you’re going to learn EXACTLY how you can improving teaching method to help improving the mental health of your students (step-by-step).
In fact, in this video, I’m going to share with you an area of professional development for teachers that shouldn’t be ignored.
With that, here’s a quick overview of what’s in the video:
Mental health is a topic that’s gaining more attention in society. It’s much needed and long overdue attention. The alarming statistics around youth suicide paint a bleak picture for the United States. Schools are trying to address it and teach students how to be mentally well. But it’s also important that you as a teacher or administrator focuses on your mental wellness as well. When you do, you inspire your students to follow in your behavior.
I was that kid in your class that’s always causing you a headache. The one that is constantly acting up and crossing the line. I had mental health challenges, was expelled from multiple schools, hospitalized for my mental health, and even attempted suicide. It’s a good reminder that you never really know what’s going on behind the scenes.
When I do professional development for teacher workshops, I share my personal story so you can see what’s behind the behavior. This can give you a new perspective for interacting with and helping your students going forward.
It’s also important that you address your own mental health. Teaching is a stressful position and one that requires you to have a lot of self-awareness when interacting with your students and coworkers. My sessions address all of this.
In short, this video will show you actionable ways that you and your school can be helped by a professional development session on mental health in 2019.

http://www.TransformingStigma.Com/what-is-mental-health-exactly.html What is mental health exactly. In this video, mental health speaker Mike Veny talks about what the term actually means. Some people refer to it as ‘psychological health’ or ‘behavioral health’. Regardless of which term you use, Mike believes that it refers to 3 things:
1. The health of your thoughts. This includes thinking about harming yourself or hearing voices. This can distort your perception of reality and lead to confusion.
2. The health of your feelings. This includes extreme mania and depression.
3. The health of your behavior. This includes acting out inappropriately toward yourself or others.
If any of these aren’t well, then you are having a mental health challenge (some call it a mental illness).
Some people are of the opinion that your thoughts lead to feelings. Your feelings lead to your behavior. Your behavior then leads to other thoughts. If you look at mental health from this point of view, then you have a framework for taking care of yourself mentally.
Taking care of your mental health can include:
* Seeing a therapist or counselor.
* Taking psychiatric medication.
* Surrounding yourself with positive people.
* Exercise.
* Nutrition.
* Meditation.
* Maintaining a healthy work/life balance.
* Getting sleep.
Interestingly, many of the activities listed above are essential for your physical health as well. Sometimes people like to separate mental health from physical health. Although they are different, they work in synergy.
