http://www.TransformingStigma.com In this news segment on the talk show, Fresh Outlook, mental health speaker, Mike Veny addresses the correlation between gun violence and mental illness. This has been a hot topic in the media because of terrorist attacks and mass shootings.
Mike was invited to be on this show in response to President Barack Obama’s recent Executive Order on gun laws. The Executive Order includes mental health funding. Mike firmly believes that this is no correlation between the status of ones mental health and gun violence. He argues that if someone wants to harm others, then they will decided to. This is not a mental health issue. Correlating mental illness and gun violence increases the stigma surrounding mental health.
At the same time, Mike is glad that the subject of mental health is being discussed more these days. He believes that House Speaker Paul Ryan and Congress needs to support a bill for increased mental health funding. “Ulimately,” says Veny, “mental health is an a economic issue. If people are mentally healthier, they will be more productive in society. This has a positive effect on everyone.”
In this video, host Logan Crawford and him go back and forth about where to draw the line with background checks. As the show goes on, there are a variety of opinions on how to solve the gun violence problem here in the United States of America. Additional guests include Jackie Guzda, Bill Rosenberg, and Lance Simmens. Each guest offers a unique perspective on what must be done to address these issues.
