http://www.TransformingStigma.Com In this video, Mike Veny details the birth of Transforming Stigma™. This short speech was recorded as part of a panel on overcoming challenges at the 2014 National Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization (C-E-O) Conference at the Hyatt Grand Cypress in Orlando, Florida.
First, Mike shares about filing bankruptcy in 2005 and building a career as a drummer after that. Then in 2011, Mike had a mental health breakdown. After reaching out to a friend from the New York State Department of Mental Health for help, she responded with an invitation for him to speak at her conference.
After that first speech, Mike was traveling around the country within a few months, opening up mental health conferences as a keynote speaker. Transforming Stigma™ was born. In the spirit of overcoming challenges, Mike reminds us that sometimes our biggest challenges are our greatest opportunities. Sometimes that thing that you are struggling with can inspire the perfect business idea. The key is being aware and open to it.
Entrepreneurship was always in Mike’s blood, but he never would have thought he’d be marketing the toughest thing of all – his own issues. Although, he never dreamed of being a mental health speaker (who does?), Mike is honored to do this work to help others who are like him. Mike knows what it’s like to feel a lost sense of hope. Mike knows what it’s like to feel pain. Mike knows what it’s like to be scared. This is why he does this work in mental health.
Your greatest challenges can be your greatest opportunities.

Awkward Conversations in Mental Health
Today you’re going to learn EXACTLY how to talk about mental health.
In fact, in this video, I’m going to explain why it’s OK to have awkward conversations and just how to do it.
With that, here’s a quick overview of what’s in the video:
If you talk about mental health it’s going to feel awkward. Sorry, not sorry. Talking about mental health leads to awkward conversations. That doesn’t mean it’s bad and it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t talk about it. In fact, the more awkward a mental health conversation is, the more effective it is. And, that’s what we need for mental health awareness and to help with things like suicide prevention.
But, I get that as people, we don’t like to feel uncomfortable. We worry about the awkward. But, it’s time to embrace it and get a little awkward. And, in this video I give pointers on how to talk about mental health. Here are some things that you will learn:
Mental health conversation starters that you can use in your everyday life
Why you need to learn how to shut up and listen
Why mental health conversation questions need to be open-ended
What things you should AVOID saying
When you follow the tips that are provided in this video, not only will you become more comfortable talking about mental health in general, but you’ll know how to check up on the loved ones in your life and let them know that you care.
Remember, it’s not just you. Mental health conversations are awkward. Embrace it and go for it!
In short, this video will show you actionable ways to start having more conversations about mental health in 2019.

http://www.OC87RecoverYDiaries.com/mike-veny/ Mike Veny, weight lifter, professional musician, ted talker, and mental health keynote speaker, has something to say about what it means to be a real man with mental health issues. As anyone who has ever been afflicted by issues with mental health or has been the friend, family member, or loved one of someone who has suffered due to their issues with mental health can attest to, to hear Mike Veny speak is to hear some very real, very raw, and very poignant talk on the matter. Mike has made it his personal mission to not only talk about mental health issues and how they have affected his life but also to let his listeners know just how he has overcame and continues to overcome and to be an advocate for mental health awareness. He does this through traveling around the world as motivational and inspirational mental health speaker.
In his early years Veny was repeatedly expelled from school due to behavior problems and spent time in a psychiatric hospital on three different occasions. Veny admits that in his childhood the ‘real men’ he idolized were thugs, tough guys, and trouble makers, who in retrospect were more than likely suffering from mental health issues of their own. Anger, Veny says, is a common disguise for depression among men. Veny contends that this is especially true in a society in which many men are struggling to determine just what a healthy sense of masculinity is.
Mike says he has accepted that his battle with depression and anxiety may be an ongoing one and emphasizes that he only wants to be in control of his life. As a professional drummer, he uses his talent for personal therapy, reaching out to others, and for his continuing advocacy for understanding mental health issues. As a mental health keynote speaker some may find it odd that Veny never wanted to be a speaker in the first place. Mike says he’s far more interested in people not dying and only wants to be a disruption that will get people talking about mental health. Until the suicide rate drops to zero, Mike assures, he won’t close his mouth about mental health.
He is honored to have had the opportunity to work with OC87 Recovery Diaries to release this video on depression and masculinity.
