http://www.OC87RecoverYDiaries.com/mike-veny/ Mike Veny, weight lifter, professional musician, ted talker, and mental health keynote speaker, has something to say about what it means to be a real man with mental health issues. As anyone who has ever been afflicted by issues with mental health or has been the friend, family member, or loved one of someone who has suffered due to their issues with mental health can attest to, to hear Mike Veny speak is to hear some very real, very raw, and very poignant talk on the matter. Mike has made it his personal mission to not only talk about mental health issues and how they have affected his life but also to let his listeners know just how he has overcame and continues to overcome and to be an advocate for mental health awareness. He does this through traveling around the world as motivational and inspirational mental health speaker.
In his early years Veny was repeatedly expelled from school due to behavior problems and spent time in a psychiatric hospital on three different occasions. Veny admits that in his childhood the ‘real men’ he idolized were thugs, tough guys, and trouble makers, who in retrospect were more than likely suffering from mental health issues of their own. Anger, Veny says, is a common disguise for depression among men. Veny contends that this is especially true in a society in which many men are struggling to determine just what a healthy sense of masculinity is.
Mike says he has accepted that his battle with depression and anxiety may be an ongoing one and emphasizes that he only wants to be in control of his life. As a professional drummer, he uses his talent for personal therapy, reaching out to others, and for his continuing advocacy for understanding mental health issues. As a mental health keynote speaker some may find it odd that Veny never wanted to be a speaker in the first place. Mike says he’s far more interested in people not dying and only wants to be a disruption that will get people talking about mental health. Until the suicide rate drops to zero, Mike assures, he won’t close his mouth about mental health.
He is honored to have had the opportunity to work with OC87 Recovery Diaries to release this video on depression and masculinity.

If you talk about mental health it’s going to feel awkward. Sorry, not sorry. Talking about mental health leads to awkward conversations. That doesn’t mean it’s bad and it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t talk about it. In fact, the more awkward a mental health conversation is, the more effective it is. And, that’s what we need for mental health awareness and to help with things like suicide prevention.
But, I get that as people, we don’t like to feel uncomfortable. We worry about the awkward. But, it’s time to embrace it and get a little awkward. And, in this video I give pointers on how to talk about mental health. Here are some things that you will learn:
Mental health conversation starters that you can use in your everyday life

Today you’re going to see my keynote from the Peace of Mind Tyler Conference in 2017.
In fact, in this video, I’m going to show you mental health is a critical component of the diversity and inclusion conversation.
My name is Mike Veny and I am a diversity and inclusion speaker who is focused on mental health. When you look at mental health through the perspective of diversity and inclusion, you gain better insight on how to transform the stigma surrounding mental health. People living with mental health colleges have the potential to bring a unique contribution to any team or work environment.
People living with mental health challenges are often treated as a liability and feel like a liability in professional environments. The stigma surrounding mental health makes it difficult for them to perform at their best. In fact, firmly believe that this stigma contributes to decreased productivity and ultimately absenteeism. This downward spiral decreases an organizations profitability.
It’s time to make a change in how we view mental health in professional environments. Not only should we be talking about, but we should be embracing it.
I deliver presentations like this as a keynote speaker at conferences, companies, colleges, and schools. At a recent event I spoke at, I learned about the importance of saying the word, “inclusion” before you say, “diversity”. This is simply due to the fact that focusing on inclusion is the beginning of diversity.
In short, this video will show you actionable ways to mental health as a component of diversity and inclusion in 2019.
