Today you’re going to see my keynote from the Peace of Mind Tyler Conference in 2017.
In fact, in this video, I’m going to show you mental health is a critical component of the diversity and inclusion conversation.
My name is Mike Veny and I am a diversity and inclusion speaker who is focused on mental health. When you look at mental health through the perspective of diversity and inclusion, you gain better insight on how to transform the stigma surrounding mental health. People living with mental health colleges have the potential to bring a unique contribution to any team or work environment.
People living with mental health challenges are often treated as a liability and feel like a liability in professional environments. The stigma surrounding mental health makes it difficult for them to perform at their best. In fact, firmly believe that this stigma contributes to decreased productivity and ultimately absenteeism. This downward spiral decreases an organizations profitability.
It’s time to make a change in how we view mental health in professional environments. Not only should we be talking about, but we should be embracing it.
I deliver presentations like this as a keynote speaker at conferences, companies, colleges, and schools. At a recent event I spoke at, I learned about the importance of saying the word, “inclusion” before you say, “diversity”. This is simply due to the fact that focusing on inclusion is the beginning of diversity.
In short, this video will show you actionable ways to mental health as a component of diversity and inclusion in 2019.

How To Prepare For A Recession: Staying Sane With Layoff News (ACTIONABLE) [2023]
https://bit.ly/mv-opensesame Learn how to prepare for a recession and how to stay sane with layoff anxiety. Mike Veny created this as part of a video series on how to prepare for a recession to support people dealing with layoff anxiety or job loss anxiety.
Prior to and during a recession, recession news is non-stop. The easiest thing to do would be to stop watching the news, but you need to stay informed.
Then there’s the negativity. Complaining and commiserating about recession news is a form of trauma bonding that is not good for your mental health.
Watch this video so you can prepare for a recession by being proactive about your mental wellness.

Understanding the Unique Stigma of Minority Mental Health
There is a unique stigma that surrounds minority mental health. Don’t get me wrong, mental health in general is stigmatized, but there’s a different stigma when it comes to the black community.
We are a culture of honor. We don’t like to be disrespected. And that doesn’t sound like a bad thing, but if we’re not careful, it can become one of the mental health barriers that we face. When we admit that we’re struggling with mental illness or disorders like depression, we can start to feel like we’re disrespecting ourselves.
Mental health stigma awareness is crucial in empowering people to get the help they need.
In this mental health stigma video, I share about this unique stigma in minority cultures and communities. I also talk about the role that the strong black man plays in this stigma. I’ve shared about the perception and idea of the “strong black man” in a previous blog post linked below. As we address the stigma, there’s a need for us to redefine what it means to be healthy, strong, and whole.
There are also a few minority mental health tips I share that I believe are important for change, as well as a few things we can do to improve the situation for black and brown youth and the community as a whole.
