http://www.TransformingStigma.com In this video, mental health speaker, Mike Veny, shares the story of how he met his personal trainer and nutritionist, Maik Wiedenbach. Maik has worked with him to develop a healthier lifestyle. Mike now has an exercise program and nutrition program that are both customized to the needs of his mental illness.
As a person living with mental illness, Mike Veny knows about the connection between mental health and physical health. In order to keep himself stable, Mike has routines, systems, checklists, and appointments that have forced him to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
To help with his depression, Mike takes coconut oil and fish oil in the morning. In addition, he makes it a point to exercise and get sunlight for at least a half an hour each day. As a mental health speaker, Mike is constantly on the road speaking at conferences and events around the world. Therefore, it’s imperative that he takes care of himself.
Mike Veny truly believes that connection between mental health and physical health is clear. However, focusing on your physical health alone isn’t part of a complete recovery. It’s important to constantly seek out professional help, too.
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” The WHO states that “there is no health without mental health.”
The Canadian Mental Health Association’s Ontario branch is leading in this area with two programs that target the connection between mental health and physical health.
Minding Our Bodies – a program aimed at promoting consistent exercise, sound nutrition, and health lifestyle decisions.
Diabetes and Mental Health Peer Support – program that supports people who have Diabetes and serious mental illness.

The Mental Illness Civil Rights Movement

http://www.TransformingStigma.com/programs When most people think of a ‘civil rights movement’, they immediately think of the Civil Rights Movement that took place in the United States of America between 1954 and 1968. Rosa Parks is considered by many to be the the mother of the Civil Rights Movement because of her refusal to give up her seat on a segregated bus.
There is a new Civil Rights Movement happening in the United States of America. It’s the Mental Illness Civil Rights Movement. In this country, as in many other countries, a stigma exists when it comes to mental health. Mike Veny, a mental health guest motivational speaker says that stigma includes “stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination”.
The Mental Illness Civil Rights Movement is centered around discrimination. This typically includes job discrimination and housing discrimination – complete violations of one’s Civil Rights.
In a Huffington Post article from 2013 titled, “Mental Illness as a Civil Rights Issue”, author Paul Heroux offers four potential solutions.
* Increasing investment in community mental health programs.
* Increasing public awareness campaigns that address mental health stigma.
* Increasing police training in mental health.
* Increasing civil rights legislation and protection for people with mental illness.
Mental illness discrimination is a challenge in other places, too. During a recent trip to Bermuda where Mike Veny was hired by the Bermuda Mental Health Foundation to deliver his “Transforming Stigma into Strength” presentation, he learned about some of the challenges with mental illness discrimination in Bermuda.
According to attorney Michael Hanson, The Human Rights Commission in Bermuda had 11 complaints about mental illness discrimination in 2014. Because of outdated laws, the 11 people had NO PROTECTION under the law. Government officials in Bermuda have committed to addressing it this Fall.
Whether it’s Bermuda or the United States, the mental illness discussion is a civil rights movement that will help everyone thrive.

#1 Youth Speaker – 2020 (True Story!)
Today you’re going to learn EXACTLY how I connect with students as a youth speaker (step-by-step).
In fact, in this video, I’m going to show you a portion of a keynote presentation that I delivered.
With that, here’s a quick overview of what’s in the video:
As a person that has struggled with mental health challenges since childhood, I have a unique perspective as a youth motivational speaker. As you’ll see in this video, when I’m talking with students as a youth speaker, I’m not just talking at them. I’m sharing my personal story, including the actual struggles that I went through.
Instead of just telling them about mental health challenges, I walk them through my own journey which included multiple expulsions, multiple extended stays in a mental hospital, and attempting to take my own life as an elementary student. I struggled with anxiety, depression, anger as a result of the depression, and self-harm among other challenges.
School can be difficult for anyone with or without mental health challenges. And, that’s why students need youth inspirational speakers that are willing to share their stories so the students can relate and know that they are not alone. As a motivation speaker, I enjoy sharing my story, even the painful moments, in order to help our youth not have to struggle through the same things that I struggled through.
In short, this video will show you actionable ways I can help transform stigma at your youth event in 2019.
