http://www.TransformingStigma.Com Mental health speaker, Mike Veny delivering an inspirational presentation at Family Residences and Essential Enterprises (also known as FREE). FREE is a non-profit that serves people with intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities, and mental illness on Long Island. He developed a relationship with FREE after a successful presentation at the New York State Self Advocacy Association’s Long Island Region Conference.
Mike delivered an abbreviated version of his keynote speech, Transforming Stigma into Strength. Mike believes that regardless of your challenge or disability, the stigma surrounding it can be more of a challenge. Mike knows what it feels like to have people judge him, say negative things about him, and treat him differently. After bearing that weight for the first 30 years of his life, he chose to take a hard look at a solution. His solution to stigma began with looking in the mirror. Looking in the mirror is the first step to successful self advocacy. Successful self advocacy is the key to transforming stigma.
Mike’s career path began as a professional drummer. After a mental health breakdown in 2011, he added motivational speaking to his career to empower other people to feel hope. His work as a mental health speaker allows him to grow in his own recovery and help others at the same time. Mike believes that the worst thing that any of us can feel is a lost sense of hope. The stigma surrounding intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities, and mental health is real and effects all of us. Regardless, we have the power to be proactive and transform stigma into strength.
If you are looking for a mental health speaker for your next event, then look no further.

Today we’re talking about how societal consciousness impacts mental health in the black community.
In fact, in this video, I’m going to show you how this has impacted my own life as a black man with mental health challenges.
Here’s a quick overview of what’s in the video:
Vikie Shanks, a white woman, and I, a black man, sit down to discuss a topic that often gets swept under the rug—the role societal consciousness plays in mental health within the black community. It’s an “uncomfortable” conversation that we were both very comfortable discussing.
As a black man who lives with mental health challenges, it’s been difficult. There is a stigma in society about the “strong black man”, yet there is no real definition of what that means. Can I be a strong black man if I have mental health challenges? Absolutely!
I’ve been working to redefine what this definition looks like. In order to do this, I’ve identified a few things that we need to work on changing in the black culture such as using the common mental health terminology and improving access to healthcare. To improve black mental health, these areas need to be addressed along with others.
To improve black mental illness we need to be willing to have these types of uncomfortable conversations. In this video, Vikie and I share some ways to make this possible. If we want to break down the barriers between races we need to stop walking on eggshells and starting talking to each other.
In short, this video will show you actionable ways that we can improve mental health in the black community in 2019.

Description:
Today you’re going to learn EXACTLY how you can show empathy to others.
In fact, in this video, I’m going to introduce you to a friend of mine, Vikie Shanks, who learned how to empathize the hard way—by going through challenging situations. She shares with us how the difficult times she’s been through have helped her to connect with others.
With that, here’s a quick overview of what’s in the video:
Vikie Shanks shares with me some of the personal and difficult experiences that she has been through in life. However, instead of getting stuck in these situations she has used them to help her learn to connect and empathize with others who are going through similar experiences. But it doesn’t stop there. We also discuss how we can show empathy to people even if we haven’t been through the same situation as them.
In this video, Vikie and I talk about the importance of sharing our own personal stories with others and the need for more people to be open and honest. When it comes to transforming the stigma around mental health, part of the problem is that too many people aren’t willing to talk about it. The more we are able to share, the more we are able to help people on both sides of the situation.
We share a few tips that you can use on how to talk to others to help them open up and be honest about their situations.
In short, this video will show you actionable ways to connect with and show empathy for others in 2019.

The more people are able to see the reality that no one is living a “picture perfect life,” the more we can learn to empathize with others.

The Connection Between Physical Health and Mental Health

http://www.TransformingStigma.com In this video, mental health speaker, Mike Veny, shares the story of how he met his personal trainer and nutritionist, Maik Wiedenbach. Maik has worked with him to develop a healthier lifestyle. Mike now has an exercise program and nutrition program that are both customized to the needs of his mental illness.
As a person living with mental illness, Mike Veny knows about the connection between mental health and physical health. In order to keep himself stable, Mike has routines, systems, checklists, and appointments that have forced him to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
To help with his depression, Mike takes coconut oil and fish oil in the morning. In addition, he makes it a point to exercise and get sunlight for at least a half an hour each day. As a mental health speaker, Mike is constantly on the road speaking at conferences and events around the world. Therefore, it’s imperative that he takes care of himself.
Mike Veny truly believes that connection between mental health and physical health is clear. However, focusing on your physical health alone isn’t part of a complete recovery. It’s important to constantly seek out professional help, too.
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” The WHO states that “there is no health without mental health.”
The Canadian Mental Health Association’s Ontario branch is leading in this area with two programs that target the connection between mental health and physical health.
Minding Our Bodies – a program aimed at promoting consistent exercise, sound nutrition, and health lifestyle decisions.
Diabetes and Mental Health Peer Support – program that supports people who have Diabetes and serious mental illness.
