Tompkins Elementary School drumming with Toca Percussion artist, Mike Veny. For 3 weeks each student in CET, from kindergarten through the fourth grade participated in a hands on workshop with Mike Veny as part of the music class with music teacher, Marlena Peters.
This program wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School Parent Teachers Association, music teacher Marlena Peters, principal Kelly Maloney, Putnam Westchester BOCES,Toca Percussion, and most importantly, the CET students! As a special thank you to the CET PTA, Mike hosted a free drum circle event exclusively for the parents.
In addition to rhythms, games, history, education, Mike brings the 3 B’s to Unleash Your Groove™ into every classroom: Belong, Bonding, and Believing. Every student wants to feel that they belong. Once they feel like they belong, they are open to bond with one one another. After they learn to bond, they will automatically believe in themselves more, and the group as a whole.
Mike Veny’s Unleash Your Groove™ drumming program can be brought to any school in New York State through BOCES (Board of Cooperative Educational Services). This includes BOCES programs in Capital Region, Cattaraugus-Allegany-Erie-Wyoming, Cayuga-Onondaga, Champlain Valley Educational Services, Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego, Dutchess, Erie 1, Erie 2 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus, Franklin-Essex-Hamilton, Genesee Valley Educational Partnership, Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery, Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego, Jefferson-Lewis-Hamilton-Herkimer-Oneida, Madison-Oneida, Monroe #1, Monroe 2 Nassau, Oneida-Herkimer-Madison, Onondaga-Cortland-Madison, Orange-Ulster, Orleans-Niagara, Oswego, Otsego-Delaware-Schoharie-Greene, Putnam-Northern Westchester, Questar III, Rockland, St. Lawrence-Lewis, Schuyler-Chemung-Tioga (Greater Southern Tier), Steuben-Allegany (Greater Southern Tier), Eastern Suffolk, Western Suffolk, Sullivan, Tompkins-Seneca-Tioga, Ulster, Washington-Saratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex, Wayne-Finger Lakes and Southern Westchester.

Mike Veny’s Personal Experience with Mental Health Challenges
As a mental health speaker and corporate wellness specialist, I often share my personal experience with mental health challenges in front of live audiences. I wanted to share a small piece of that story with you today.
As a child, I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I was admitted to the mental hospital several times and attempted suicide for the first time at a young age.
While I still live with these mental health challenges today, I share in this story what the turning point was for me to learn how to embrace and overcome these challenges.
If you’re living with mental health challenges, I hope my story can encourage you today.

Understanding the Unique Stigma of Minority Mental Health
There is a unique stigma that surrounds minority mental health. Don’t get me wrong, mental health in general is stigmatized, but there’s a different stigma when it comes to the black community.
We are a culture of honor. We don’t like to be disrespected. And that doesn’t sound like a bad thing, but if we’re not careful, it can become one of the mental health barriers that we face. When we admit that we’re struggling with mental illness or disorders like depression, we can start to feel like we’re disrespecting ourselves.
Mental health stigma awareness is crucial in empowering people to get the help they need.
In this mental health stigma video, I share about this unique stigma in minority cultures and communities. I also talk about the role that the strong black man plays in this stigma. I’ve shared about the perception and idea of the “strong black man” in a previous blog post linked below. As we address the stigma, there’s a need for us to redefine what it means to be healthy, strong, and whole.
There are also a few minority mental health tips I share that I believe are important for change, as well as a few things we can do to improve the situation for black and brown youth and the community as a whole.
